What to expect at your first martial arts class

Walking into a dojo for the first time can feel like a big step, whether you are booking for yourself or for your child. The good news: everyone on the mat was a beginner once, and instructors expect new faces in most classes.

Before you arrive

  • Book your trial so the instructor knows you are coming and can pick the right class for your age and experience.
  • Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early. You may be asked to fill in a short form about your health and any injuries.
  • Wear comfortable sportswear, such as a T-shirt and track pants. You do not need a uniform for a first class.
  • Bring a bottle of water, and flip-flops for walking between the changing area and the mat.

Etiquette in the dojo

Most schools have a few simple customs. Shoes come off before the mat, jewellery is removed, and many styles bow when entering the training area and at the start and end of class. You do not need to know these in advance: just watch the other students and follow along.

What happens in the class

A typical class starts with a warm-up, then moves on to basic techniques such as stances, strikes, blocks or, in grappling styles, positions and escapes. Beginners practise slowly, often with a partner or on pads, and an instructor shows each movement and corrects it gently. Classes usually finish with a cool-down and a short bow-out.

New students do not spar in their first class. Sparring is introduced later, under supervision and with protective gear, once you have learned to move with control.

Look after yourself

  • Tell the instructor about any injury or health condition before you start.
  • Go at your own pace, rest when you need to, and ask questions.
  • If you are unsure whether martial arts suits you, check with your doctor first.

After the class, ask the instructor which classes and membership would suit you next. Small, regular sessions are the easiest way to build skill and confidence.
