Many beginners rent or borrow an instrument for the first months and buy once they know they want to continue. Both are sensible; the right choice depends on the instrument and the player.
When renting makes sense
Children grow out of small violins and guitars quickly, so renting a fractional size is often cheaper than buying several in a row. Renting is also a low-risk way to try an instrument for a term.
When buying makes sense
If the player is committed and has reached a full-size instrument, buying can cost less over time. Ask your teacher to check an instrument before you buy, especially a second-hand one: a poor setup makes playing harder.
- Ask which size fits the player before you rent or buy.
- Check what the rental covers, such as repairs and strings.
- Keep the receipt and any rental agreement in a safe place.
