Back pain: when to see a chiropractor and when to see your doctor first

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people miss work or sport. Most episodes are not caused by anything serious and get better over a few weeks. Knowing who to see, and when, helps you get the right help quickly.

See a doctor or urgent care first if you have

  • Back pain after a fall, car accident or other injury.
  • Numbness around the groin or buttocks, or new problems controlling your bladder or bowels. This needs emergency care straight away.
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness in your legs that is getting worse.
  • Fever, unexplained weight loss, or a history of cancer together with new back pain.
  • Pain that is severe and constant, including at night, and does not ease when you change position.

When a chiropractor may help

For everyday back and neck pain, such as stiffness after a long day at a desk, a strain from lifting or gardening, or pain that comes and goes with movement, many people choose to see a chiropractor or physiotherapist. A good practitioner will ask about warning signs, examine you and refer you to your doctor if something needs a closer look.

Things you can do now

  • Keep moving gently. Short walks are usually better than resting in bed.
  • Use heat or a cold pack, whichever feels better, for 15 to 20 minutes at a time.
  • Ask a pharmacist which pain relief is suitable for you.
