What to expect at your first chiropractic visit

A first visit to a chiropractor is mostly about talking and understanding what is going on. Knowing what to expect makes it easier to relax and ask the questions that matter to you.

Before you come

  • Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, such as leggings or track pants and a T-shirt.
  • Bring any scans, reports or letters you already have, and a list of the medicines you take.
  • If you want to use health insurance, check your cover first and bring your card.

At the appointment

  1. A conversation. The chiropractor asks about your symptoms, your health history, your work and your goals.
  2. An assessment. They check how you move, test strength and reflexes, and look at the area that bothers you.
  3. An explanation. You hear what they found in plain words, and whether chiropractic care is likely to suit you. If not, they should tell you and suggest who to see.
  4. A plan. If you go ahead, you agree the treatment, the number of visits and the cost before anything starts.

Your questions are welcome

You can ask about any technique, ask for a gentler option or say no at any time. Some people feel a little sore for a day or two after treatment; tell your chiropractor if anything worries you. Chiropractic care does not replace your doctor, so keep them informed about ongoing health problems.
