Back pain is one of the most common reasons people miss work or sport. Most episodes are not caused by anything serious and get better over a few weeks. Knowing who to see, and when, helps you get the right help quickly.
See a doctor or urgent care first if you have
- Back pain after a fall, car accident or other injury.
- Numbness around the groin or buttocks, or new problems controlling your bladder or bowels. This needs emergency care straight away.
- Numbness, tingling or weakness in your legs that is getting worse.
- Fever, unexplained weight loss, or a history of cancer together with new back pain.
- Pain that is severe and constant, including at night, and does not ease when you change position.
When a chiropractor may help
For everyday back and neck pain, such as stiffness after a long day at a desk, a strain from lifting or gardening, or pain that comes and goes with movement, many people choose to see a chiropractor or physiotherapist. A good practitioner will ask about warning signs, examine you and refer you to your doctor if something needs a closer look.
Things you can do now
- Keep moving gently. Short walks are usually better than resting in bed.
- Use heat or a cold pack, whichever feels better, for 15 to 20 minutes at a time.
- Ask a pharmacist which pain relief is suitable for you.
