At the end of each season, a little care before you put clothes away means they come out ready to wear, not creased, yellowed or nibbled.
Clean before you store
Store clothes only when they are clean. Invisible marks from food, sweat or perfume can darken over months, and they attract moths and other pests. Wash or dry clean coats, knitwear and suits first, even if they look fine.
Choose breathable storage
- Take garments out of thin plastic cleaning bags for long-term storage. Plastic traps moisture; breathable cotton garment bags let fabric breathe.
- Fold heavy knitwear instead of hanging it, so the shoulders do not stretch.
- Keep a cool, dark, dry place. Lofts, garages and damp basements can be too warm or humid.
- Cedar blocks or lavender sachets are a pleasant addition, but they are no substitute for clean clothes and regular checks.
Special pieces
Wedding dresses, christening gowns and other heirlooms are best cleaned soon after the event, then stored flat or loosely folded in acid-free tissue in a box, away from light. Check stored items every few months and air them on a dry day.
