How often should you have an eye test?

An eye test is not only about reading letters on a chart. It also checks how your eyes work together and looks at the health of the eye itself. Many eye conditions cause no pain and no obvious change at first, so regular tests matter even when your vision seems fine.

Adults

A common guideline is for most adults aged 18 to 64 to have a comprehensive eye exam at least every two years, and for adults aged 65 and over to have one every year. Your optometrist may ask you to come back sooner, for example if you have diabetes or high blood pressure, a family history of glaucoma, or a job that is hard on your eyes.

Children

Children often do not realise they see poorly, because they think everyone sees the way they do. Many optometrists suggest a first eye exam between 6 and 12 months of age, at least one between ages 3 and 5, one before starting first grade, and then once a year through the school years. A quick vision screening at school is useful, but it is not the same as a full eye exam.

Book sooner if you notice

  • Blurred vision, up close or in the distance
  • Headaches or tired eyes after reading or screen work
  • Trouble seeing when driving at night
  • Double vision, or seeing halos around lights
  • Eyes that often feel dry, gritty or watery

When not to wait

A sudden loss or change in vision, eye pain, a shower of new floaters, flashes of light or a dark curtain across your sight need urgent attention. Call your optician or doctor the same day, or call 911 or go to an emergency room if you cannot reach them.
