Locked out? 24/7: Call (555) 016-4686

Locked out? What to do while you wait

Close-up of a weathered wooden door with metal locks, showcasing aged and rustic features.

It happens to almost everyone sooner or later: the door clicks shut and the keys are on the other side. A few calm steps make the wait shorter and safer.

1. Put safety first

If a child, a vulnerable person or a pet is locked inside a home or a car, or something is cooking on the stove, call emergency services first. Then call a locksmith.

2. Check the easy options

  • Try every door, including the back door and the garage.
  • Think about who has a spare key: a family member, a neighbour or your landlord.
  • Do not climb through windows or force a door. It is easy to get hurt or cause damage that costs more than a locksmith.

3. Call a locksmith and ask the right questions

  • What is the total price, including the call-out and any night or weekend charge?
  • Roughly when will you arrive?
  • Will you try to open the door without damaging the lock?

A good locksmith gives you a clear price on the phone before they set off.

4. Have your ID ready

Expect to show photo ID and proof that you live at the address, such as a utility bill or tenancy agreement. If your documents are inside, the locksmith checks them as soon as the door is open, before anyone goes in. It is there to protect you.

5. Stay somewhere safe and visible

Wait somewhere warm and well lit, keep your phone charged if you can, and let someone know where you are. When the door is open, ask for a receipt and think about a spare key for next time.
