A bath at home can keep your dog fresh between professional grooms. Done calmly, it can even become something your dog enjoys.
Before the bath
- Brush the coat out first: water tightens knots and mats
- Use a shampoo made for dogs, not human shampoo
- Put a non-slip mat in the tub or shower
- Have towels, treats and a lead or helper ready
During the bath
Use lukewarm water and wet the coat from the neck down, keeping water out of the eyes and ears. Lather gently, then rinse until the water runs clear: leftover shampoo can irritate the skin. Wipe the face with a damp cloth.
Drying
Squeeze out the water and towel dry well. If you use a hair dryer, keep it on a cool or low setting and keep it moving. Brush again once the coat is dry so it does not knot.
Most dogs do not need a bath more than every few weeks. If your dog has a skin problem, ask your vet which shampoo and how often.
