Sparring gear: what you need and when you need it

Close-up shot of black boxing gloves placed on a table with martial arts gear in a dimly lit room.

Sparring is controlled practice with a partner, and in most schools it starts only after a student has learned the basics. When the time comes, the right protective gear helps everyone train with more confidence. Requirements vary between styles and schools, so always check with your instructor before you buy.

Common items

  • Mouthguard: protects the teeth and is usually required for any contact sparring.
  • Gloves or mitts: padded hand protection. Striking styles often use light sparring mitts or boxing-style gloves.
  • Shin and instep guards: padding for the lower legs and feet in kicking styles.
  • Head guard: often required for children and teens, and in some adult classes.
  • Groin guard or chest guard: required in some styles and competitions.

Getting the right fit

Gear only helps if it fits. Gloves should feel snug without squeezing the hand, shin guards should stay in place when you move, and a head guard should not slip over the eyes. Children grow quickly, so check their kit every term.

Look after your kit

  • Air everything out after each class and wipe it down regularly.
  • Replace a mouthguard that is cracked, loose or worn.
  • Label your gear: many students own the same models.

Protective gear reduces some risks, but it does not remove them. Train with control, listen to your instructor, and only spar when you have been invited to.
