A first show is a big moment for a young dancer and, often, for their family too. A little preparation helps your child enjoy the stage instead of worrying about it.
In the weeks before
- Keep a note of rehearsal dates and times, including any extra weekend rehearsals.
- Check costume details early: what the school provides and what you need to buy or prepare.
- Practise the hairstyle at home once, so it is quicker on the day.
On the day
- Pack a named bag with costume, shoes, spare tights, hair kit, a snack and water.
- Arrive at the time the school asks. Backstage times are planned carefully.
- Follow the school’s rules for drop-off and collection, and for photos and filming. Many schools do not allow filming to protect every child’s privacy.
Helping with nerves
Feeling nervous is normal, even for professional dancers. Remind your child that the audience wants them to do well, and that the teachers will be there backstage. If they forget a step, they can simply keep smiling and join in again.
Afterwards
Tell your child what you enjoyed most about their dance. Effort and courage matter far more than perfect steps, and a happy first show is the best start for the next one.
