What to wear to ballet, tap and hip hop classes

Two women practicing ballet at the barre in a well-lit dance studio.

Dancewear is mostly about safety and freedom of movement. Teachers need to see how the body is moving, and dancers need shoes that grip or slide in the right way. Here is what most schools ask for. Always check your own school’s uniform list before you buy.

For a trial class

Comfortable clothes that are easy to move in, such as leggings or shorts and a fitted T-shirt, are fine for almost any first class. Bare feet or socks work for ballet and contemporary. Tie long hair back and leave jewellery at home.

Ballet

A leotard, tights or socks and soft ballet shoes. Many schools use a different leotard colour for each age group. Long hair is usually worn in a neat bun so it stays out of the dancer’s face.

Tap and jazz

Tap needs tap shoes with metal plates on the toe and heel. Jazz is danced in jazz shoes, which are soft with a split sole. A leotard or fitted top with shorts or leggings is common for both.

Hip hop and contemporary

Hip hop uses clean indoor trainers and loose, comfortable clothes. Contemporary is usually danced barefoot in fitted clothing, so the teacher can see the line of the body.

Buying tips

  • Buy shoes after the trial, once you know which class your child will join.
  • Leave a little room to grow, but not so much that the shoe slips.
  • Write your child’s name inside shoes and on uniform.
  • Ask the school about second-hand uniform before buying new.
