Respite care: why taking a break helps you keep caring

An elderly mother and adult daughter share a warm embrace on a sunny beach in Portugal.

Looking after someone you love can be rewarding, but it is also tiring. Many family carers keep going for months without a proper break. Respite care means someone else steps in for a while, so you can rest, see friends, go to your own appointments or simply sleep.

What respite care can look like

  • A few hours each week: a regular afternoon off, while a caregiver keeps your relative company at home.
  • A day or a weekend: for a family event, a short trip or a chance to recharge.
  • Longer cover: a live-in caregiver while you take a holiday or recover from your own illness.

Making the first break go well

  • Start small. A short first break helps everyone get used to the new routine.
  • Share the little details: routines, favourite foods, what helps when your relative feels unsettled.
  • Leave contact numbers, and agree how you would like to hear from the caregiver, then try not to check in too often.
  • Plan something for yourself, even if it is just a walk or a nap. A break works best when you actually take it.

It is normal to feel guilty about taking time for yourself. Rest is part of caring well: it helps you stay patient, healthy and able to keep supporting the person you love. Ask local carer support groups, too: they can be a good source of advice and company.
