When should you start shopping for your dress?

A joyful bride smiles while surrounded by beautiful wedding dresses on hangers.

Most wedding gowns are not taken off the rail and worn. They are ordered from the designer in your size, then fitted to you. That is why it helps to start earlier than you might expect.

A relaxed timeline

  • 9 to 12 months before: book your first appointments and try on different silhouettes.
  • 8 to 10 months before: choose and order your gown. Many designers need several months to make it.
  • 2 to 3 months before: start your fittings once the dress arrives.
  • 1 to 2 weeks before: final fitting, then take your dress home pressed and ready.

Getting married sooner?

Do not panic. Ask your boutique about rush orders, dresses that can be bought off the rail, or sample gowns. Lead times differ by designer, so your consultant can tell you what is realistic for the styles you like.
