Missing paperwork is one of the few things that can stop a trip at the airport. A few checks before you book, and again before you travel, save a lot of worry.
Passports
Check the expiry date of every passport in your group as soon as you start planning. Many countries ask for a passport that is valid for several months after the date you leave, and some need blank pages for stamps. Renewals can take weeks, so do not leave it late.
Visas and travel authorisations
Some destinations need a visa, others an online travel authorisation, and the rules can depend on your nationality and on where you change planes. Always check the official government website of the country you are visiting, and apply early. The decision is always made by that country.
Names must match
The names on your flight tickets must match your passports exactly. Send your travel expert a copy of the passport page, or double-check the spelling yourself before tickets are issued.
Insurance and health
- Buy travel insurance when you book, so you are covered if you have to cancel.
- Check the official health advice for your destination, including any vaccinations.
- Carry a list of any medicines you take and your insurer’s emergency number.
Keep copies
Save photos or scans of your passports, insurance and bookings somewhere you can reach from your phone, and leave a copy with someone at home. If anything is lost, copies make it much easier to sort out.
