Packing for a family holiday can feel like moving house. A simple plan helps you travel lighter, get through the airport faster and find what you need when a child needs it right now.
Start with a shared list
Write one list for the whole family a week before you travel, split by person and by bag. Older children can pack their own bag from the list, then you check it together.
Carry-on essentials for every family
- Passports, tickets, booking confirmations and insurance details, kept together in one place.
- Any medicines you need, in their original packaging, plus a basic first-aid kit.
- A change of clothes for each child, and a spare top for each adult.
- Snacks, an empty water bottle to fill after security, and wipes.
- Chargers, headphones and something to do that does not need Wi-Fi.
Pack less than you think
Plan outfits for half the trip and do a quick wash halfway through, or check whether your accommodation has a washing machine. Choose clothes that mix and match, and pack layers for cool evenings and air-conditioned flights.
Leave room for the things you can get there
Sun cream, nappies and toiletries are easy to buy at most destinations. Ask your travel expert or your hotel what is provided, such as cots, high chairs and beach towels, before you pack them.
Label everything
Put a name and phone number in every bag, and take a photo of each suitcase before you check it in. If a bag goes missing, a clear photo makes the airline report much quicker.
