How to taste wine like a pro

A barman pours white wine into glasses on a wooden counter at sunset.

You do not need special training to enjoy a tasting. These five steps, used by winemakers and sommeliers alike, simply slow you down so you notice more.

  1. Look. Tilt the glass against a white background. Colour and depth hint at the grape, the age and how the wine was made.
  2. Swirl. A few gentle circles let air into the wine and release its aromas.
  3. Smell. Take two or three short sniffs. Think in families first: fruit, flowers, spice, earth or oak.
  4. Sip. Let the wine cover your whole tongue. Notice sweetness, acidity (does your mouth water?), tannin (does it feel dry?) and body.
  5. Think. How long does the flavour last after you swallow? Do you like it, and would you drink it with food?

Tasting room tips

  • Start with lighter wines and finish with fuller or sweeter ones.
  • Use the spittoon or pour away what you do not want; it is normal and nobody minds.
  • Drink water between wines and eat something.
  • Ask questions. Your host is there to help, whatever your level.

Please taste responsibly. If you are driving, plan to spit, share a tasting or choose a designated driver.
