Every child finds some topics harder than others, and that is normal. Sometimes, though, a little extra one-to-one or small group time helps a child get back on track. Here are signs worth noticing.
Signs in schoolwork
- Homework takes much longer than it should, or often ends in tears.
- Marks have dropped in one subject, or comments from school mention gaps.
- Your child can follow along in class but struggles to work on their own.
- Basic skills, such as times tables or spelling, still slow them down.
Signs in confidence
- They say they are “bad at” a subject or avoid talking about it.
- They rush through work to get it over with, or will not start at all.
- Upcoming tests make them unusually worried.
Signs it is about stretch, not catch-up
Tutoring is not only for children who are behind. A child who finishes work quickly and wants more challenge, or who is preparing for an entrance exam, can also enjoy focused sessions.
What to do next
- Talk to your child’s teacher first. They can tell you where your child is and what would help most.
- Ask your child how they feel about the subject, and listen without judging.
- If you try tutoring, look for a free assessment, clear goals and regular updates on progress.
Every child learns at their own pace. The aim is not perfect marks but steady progress and a child who feels able to try.
