How to help your child prepare for exams

Exams can feel big for children and for parents. The good news is that steady, simple habits help more than last-minute cramming. Here is a plan you can start a few weeks before the first exam.

Make a simple revision timetable

  • Write down every exam date and subject, then count back the weeks you have.
  • Plan short sessions of 25 to 40 minutes with a break in between, rather than whole afternoons.
  • Mix subjects across the week, and come back to each topic more than once.
  • Keep one evening and part of the weekend free. Rest is part of the plan.

Use active revision, not just rereading

Reading notes again feels productive, but children remember more when they have to pull the answer out of their own head. Try these instead:

  • Flashcards with a question on one side and the answer on the other.
  • Explaining a topic out loud to you, a sibling or even the family pet.
  • Turning a page of notes into a mind map or a short list of key points from memory.
  • Practice questions, then checking the answers and fixing mistakes.

Practise with past papers

Ask the school which past papers or sample questions they recommend. Start with one section at a time, then try a full paper with a timer closer to the exam. Go through the marking together and note the topics that need another look.

Look after sleep, food and worries

  • A regular bedtime matters more than a late-night revision session.
  • Breakfast and a water bottle help on exam mornings.
  • Talk about worries early. If anxiety seems to be getting in the way, speak to your child’s teacher or school counsellor.

Above all, praise effort and progress, not only marks. If you would like help building a revision plan, book a free assessment and we will look at it together.
