An air conditioner works hard for months at a time, and like any machine it runs best when it is looked after. The simple answer to how often it needs a service: once a year, ideally in spring before the hot weather arrives.
Why a yearly tune-up helps
- Better efficiency. Dirty coils and a clogged filter make the system work harder to cool your home.
- Fewer breakdowns. A technician can spot worn parts, loose connections or low refrigerant before they leave you without cooling.
- Longer life. Regular care helps the equipment last.
- Warranty terms. Some manufacturers ask for regular maintenance. Check the paperwork that came with your unit.
What you can do between visits
- Check the air filter every month and change it when it looks dirty.
- Keep at least two feet of clear space around the outdoor unit: trim plants and clear leaves.
- Keep supply and return vents open and free of furniture.
- Listen for new noises and watch for warm air, ice on the pipes or water near the indoor unit.
When to call sooner
If the system blows warm air, cycles on and off, trips the breaker or your energy bill jumps for no clear reason, book a repair visit instead of waiting for the next tune-up. A heat pump heats and cools, so it usually needs a check before both seasons.
