Spa menus can be confusing when you just want to relax. These three massages are on most menus, and each one suits a slightly different mood.
Swedish or relaxing massage
Long, flowing strokes with oil and light to medium pressure. It is a good choice for a first massage, or when you simply want to switch off for an hour.
Deep tissue massage
Slower, firmer pressure on specific areas such as the back, neck and shoulders. It can feel intense in places, so tell your therapist if anything is more than you are comfortable with. Firmer is not automatically better.
Hot stone massage
Smooth, heated stones are used as an extension of the therapist’s hands and placed on the body. Many guests find the warmth very soothing. It is usually not offered during pregnancy, so mention it when you book.
Still not sure?
Tell the spa how you want to feel afterwards and whether you prefer gentle or firm pressure. They can suggest a treatment and length that fits, and your therapist can always adjust during the session.
