A long wine list can feel like an exam. It does not have to be. These four questions get you to a good bottle quickly.
1. What is everyone eating?
Light dishes such as fish, salads and vegetables go well with crisp whites and rosé. Rich dishes such as lamb, steak and mushroom risotto suit fuller reds. If the table is mixed, a light red or a dry rosé sits happily in the middle.
2. Do you like it fruity or dry?
This is the most useful thing to tell your server. It narrows the list more than any grape name.
3. What would you like to spend?
Point to a price on the list that feels right. A good server will suggest bottles around that price, not above it.
4. Would you like to taste first?
Many wines are also sold by the glass, so you can try one before committing to a bottle. Alcohol-free options are always on the list too.
Not sure? Just ask. Helping you choose is part of the evening.
