How to keep your gutters clear

Close-up of rainwater flowing from a gutter during a storm, capturing the essence of rainy weather.

Gutters and downspouts carry rainwater away from your roof, walls and foundations. When they block, water spills over the edge, soaks the fascia boards and can find its way into walls and basements. Keeping them clear is one of the simplest ways to look after your home.

When to clean them

Most homes need their gutters cleaned at least twice a year: in late spring and again in the fall after the leaves have fallen. Homes with tall trees nearby may need it more often.

Signs your gutters need attention

  • Water pouring over the edge of the gutter during rain.
  • Plants or moss growing in the gutter.
  • Gutters sagging or pulling away from the fascia.
  • Stains or peeling paint on the walls below the gutters.
  • Puddles or worn soil at the bottom of the downspouts.

Doing it safely

  1. Use a sturdy ladder on firm, level ground, and have someone hold it.
  2. Never lean the ladder against the gutter itself, and do not overreach: move the ladder instead.
  3. Wear gloves and scoop out the debris by hand or with a gutter scoop.
  4. Flush the gutter with a hose to check that the water runs to the downpipe.

Gutter guards can reduce how often you need to clean, but they still need checking. If your gutters are on a second story, or they leak at the joints, it is safer to ask a roofer or gutter company to do the job.
