A well-pressed shirt can look fresh for longer than you might think. A few simple habits keep collars sharp and creases away between visits to the cleaner.
- Hang it straight away. Take the shirt off the chair and put it on a hanger as soon as you get home, so the fabric relaxes back into shape.
- Use the right hanger. A shaped wooden or padded hanger supports the shoulders. Thin wire hangers can leave bumps.
- Do up two buttons. Fasten the top and a middle button so the collar and front stay in place on the rail.
- Give it space. A crowded wardrobe presses new creases into every shirt. Leave a finger’s width between hangers.
- Steam, do not iron, a worn shirt. Ironing over sweat or deodorant can yellow the fabric. A light steam freshens creases; clean the shirt before you press it again.
- Rotate. Wearing the same shirt two days running wears out the collar and cuffs faster.
When you drop shirts off, let the counter know whether you prefer them on hangers or folded, and how much starch you like. Light starch keeps a crisp look while staying comfortable.
