Many therapists now offer sessions both in the office and by video. Neither is the “right” choice for everyone. It depends on your week, your home and what feels comfortable to you.
Online sessions may suit you if
- Travelling to an office is hard because of work, childcare, health or distance.
- You feel more at ease talking from a familiar place.
- Your schedule changes often and you need more flexible times.
In-person sessions may suit you if
- It is hard to find a private, quiet space at home.
- You would like a clear break between therapy and the rest of your day.
- You find it easier to connect with someone in the same room.
Tips for a good online session
- Find a private space where you will not be overheard, or use headphones.
- Check your connection and device a few minutes before you start.
- Turn off notifications and keep a glass of water nearby.
- Agree with your therapist what happens if the call drops.
Licensing rules usually depend on where you are during the session, so tell your therapist if you plan to travel. You can also mix both: some people start in person and move online later, or the other way round.
If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, please do not wait for a therapy appointment. In the US, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911. Elsewhere, call your local emergency number.
