Your first tattoo: how to prepare for the appointment

Feeling a little nervous before your first tattoo is completely normal. Knowing what to expect takes most of the worry away. Here is how to get ready, from the consultation to the moment you leave the studio.

Before the day

  • Book a consultation. Bring a few reference pictures, and know roughly the size and placement you want. Your artist will tell you what works and what it will cost.
  • Check the age rule. Most studios only tattoo clients aged 18 and over, and you will need a valid photo ID.
  • Mention allergies and medication. Tell the studio about skin conditions, allergies or medicines you take. If you are unsure whether you should get tattooed, ask your doctor first.
  • Plan around the healing time. Avoid booking right before a beach holiday or a big swim event, as you will need to keep the tattoo out of water and sun for a couple of weeks.

The day before

Get a good night’s sleep and drink plenty of water. Skip alcohol the day before: it does not help with nerves and can make you feel worse in the chair.

On the day

  • Eat a proper meal an hour or two before, and bring a snack and a drink for longer sessions.
  • Wear comfortable clothes that give easy access to the area, and that you do not mind getting a little ink on.
  • Bring your photo ID, your deposit receipt if you have one, and headphones if music helps you relax.

In the chair

Your artist will show you the stencil so you can check the position before they start. Most people describe the feeling as a scratching or stinging that is easier than they expected, and it varies with placement. You can ask for a short break at any time, so speak up if you need one.

Before you leave, your artist wraps the tattoo and explains the aftercare. Ask any questions you have: there are no silly ones.
