At a fitting the tailor pins the garment on you, so it is altered for the way you stand and move. What you wear with it changes where a hem falls and how a waist sits, so bring these with you.
- The garment itself, clean and ironed if you can, so the tailor sees how it really hangs.
- The shoes you will wear with it. Heel height changes the right length of trousers and dresses by several centimetres.
- The right underlayers: the shirt you will wear under a jacket, or the bra and shapewear you will wear under a dress.
- Anything that goes with it, such as a belt, a waistcoat or the jacket that goes with the trousers.
- Your date, if the garment is for a wedding, an interview or a trip, so the work can be planned back from it.
Stand as you normally do while the garment is pinned, and say how you like it to feel: some people like trousers with a slight break over the shoe, others prefer none. If a garment is for a wedding, expect two or three fittings so the final adjustments can be made close to the date.
