Putting your things in storage between homes

Steel storage units in an industrial warehouse with a blue hand truck in the center, ideal for logistics.

Storage helps when your moving dates do not line up, when you are renovating, or when you are moving into a smaller home for a while. A little planning makes it far easier to get your things back out.

Choose the right kind of storage

  • Container storage: your things are loaded into a sealed container and kept at a warehouse. Good for whole-house moves.
  • Self storage: you rent a unit and can visit it yourself. Good if you need to reach items often.
  • Ask about access hours, how the items are protected and what insurance applies while they are stored.

Pack for storage

  • Use boxes of the same few sizes so they stack safely.
  • Clean and fully dry fridges, washing machines and garden tools before they go in.
  • Wrap furniture in blankets or covers rather than plastic, so it can breathe.
  • Do not store food, plants, fuel, paint or anything flammable.

Make a simple list

Number every box and keep a list of what is inside on your phone. Put the things you may need first, such as winter coats or paperwork, near the front.

Getting your things back

Give your moving company a few days’ notice of your delivery date, and check that the new home has parking and access ready. Unpack the bedrooms and kitchen first, and the rest can follow at your own pace.
