A seasonal box follows the field rather than the shop. That means a few things arrive often while they are at their best, and some favourites are missing for months.
What changes through the year
- Spring: the hungry gap. Stored roots run low and the first leaves, herbs and asparagus arrive.
- Summer: the widest choice: salad, beans, courgettes, tomatoes from the polytunnel and soft fruit.
- Autumn: roots, squash, leeks and the last tomatoes.
- Winter: kale, leeks, cabbage and stored roots and squash.
Making the most of it
When one vegetable keeps coming, try a new way of cooking it each week: raw in a salad, roasted, in a soup or grated into a fritter. Your grower knows the box well, so ask them what they cook with it.
Exact months depend on your region and on the weather each year.
