An opening, sometimes called a private view, is the first evening of a new exhibition. Despite the name, most are open to anyone who would like to come, and they are usually free.
What happens
Openings usually run for two or three hours in the early evening. The work is on the walls, the artist is often there, and there may be a short welcome or talk. People come and go, so you do not need to arrive on time or stay to the end.
A few tips
- Look at the work first, then chat. It is fine to ask the artist or the gallery team about a piece.
- Pick up the exhibition text or price list if there is one: it tells you about the works and the artist.
- Openings can be busy. If you want to look closely or talk about buying, come back on a quieter day.
- Join the gallery’s invitation list to hear about the next one.
You do not need to know anything about art to enjoy an opening. Curiosity is enough.
