How to choose a gym membership that fits your week

The best membership is the one you will actually use. Before you sign up, think about how often you can realistically train and what you enjoy doing.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. How many times a week can I train, honestly?
  2. Do I want coached classes, open gym time or both?
  3. Which times of day work for me, and are there classes then?
  4. Do I need flexibility for travel, shift work or holidays?

Common options

  • Monthly: flexible and easy to stop, often with a notice period.
  • Annual: usually cheaper per month, but you commit for longer.
  • Class packs: a set number of classes to use within a period, good if you train once a week or less.

Read the terms

Before you join anywhere, ask for the full terms: contract length, notice period, joining fees, freezes and what happens if you move or get injured. A good gym will be happy to explain them and let you try a class first.
