A good beard is mostly about small, regular habits. You do not need a shelf full of products: a gentle wash, a little oil and a comb go a long way.
Every day
- Rinse the beard with warm water when you shower. Use a mild beard wash two or three times a week rather than every day, so the skin underneath does not dry out.
- Pat it dry with a towel instead of rubbing.
- Warm two or three drops of beard oil in your palms and work it in down to the skin.
- Comb it through in the direction it grows.
Every week or two
- Trim stray hairs with small scissors, a little at a time.
- Keep the neckline about a finger’s width above your Adam’s apple.
- Use a balm on longer beards to keep the shape in place.
When to see your barber
Shaping the cheek line and blending a beard into a fade is easier with a second pair of eyes and the right tools. Most people book a beard shape every two to four weeks and keep it tidy at home in between.
If your skin feels itchy or sore under the beard for more than a few days, ask a pharmacist or doctor rather than trying new products one after another.
