Designing an extension for daylight

Bright modern living room with skylights, open space, and wooden flooring.

A new extension adds space, but it can also block light from the rooms it joins. Thinking about daylight from the start keeps the old and new parts of the house bright.

Ideas that help

  • Roof lights: light from above reaches deeper into a room than light from a wall window of the same size.
  • Keep the middle bright: place a roof light where the extension meets the existing house, the darkest part of a deep plan.
  • Orientation: know where the sun is in the morning and afternoon, and plan rooms you use at those times on that side.
  • Light surfaces: pale floors, walls and ceilings reflect daylight further into the room.
  • Shade where needed: large south- or west-facing glass can overheat in summer, so plan overhangs or blinds early.

Glazing and roof lights affect energy use and the building rules your project must meet, so discuss sizes and specifications with your architect before you decide.
