How many driving lessons do you need?

A father sits beside his son who is learning to drive, inside a car.

It is the first question almost every learner asks, and the honest answer is: it depends. Some people have driven a little with family before their first lesson, others have never sat in the driver’s seat. Both can become safe, confident drivers. They simply start from different places.

What makes the biggest difference

  • Experience before you start. Any time spent on private practice or off-road driving helps with the basic controls.
  • How often you drive. Regular lessons, for example once or twice a week, usually mean less time spent repeating what you learned last time.
  • Manual or automatic. Learning clutch control and gear changes takes extra time, so many learners need a few more lessons in a manual car.
  • Your confidence. Nervous learners often need more time at the start, then catch up quickly once the basics feel natural.
  • Practice between lessons. If you can drive with a qualified supervising driver where the rules allow it, you build experience much faster.

Ask for an honest estimate

After your first lesson, a good instructor can tell you roughly where you are and suggest a plan. Ask them to update that estimate every few weeks. It is normal for it to change as you progress.

Make every lesson count

  • Sleep well and eat before a lesson, especially an early one.
  • Read your progress notes before you get in the car, so you know what you are working on.
  • Ask questions whenever something is unclear. There is no such thing as a silly question on a driving lesson.
  • Study for your theory or knowledge test early. It makes road signs and rules feel familiar on your lessons.

Focus on becoming a safe driver rather than on a number of hours. When you can drive a full lesson without help in all kinds of traffic, you are close to test standard.

Licence and test rules differ from place to place. Check the current rules with your licensing authority, and ask your instructor what applies to you.
