Feeling nervous before a driving test is completely normal. Knowing what will happen, step by step, makes the day feel far more manageable. The exact format depends on where you take your test, so check the details with your licensing authority, but most tests follow a similar pattern.
Before you leave home
- Check the time and place of your test, and plan to arrive with some time to spare.
- Pack the documents your licensing authority asks for, usually your learner’s permit or provisional licence and your test confirmation.
- If you wear glasses or contact lenses for driving, bring them.
- If you are using your instructor’s car, confirm the pick-up time for your warm-up lesson.
At the test centre
Your examiner checks your documents and, in many places, your eyesight. You may also be asked a few vehicle safety questions, such as how to check the tyres or the lights, before you set off.
During the drive
- The examiner gives you clear directions. If you did not hear or understand one, ask them to repeat it.
- You will usually drive on a mix of roads and may be asked to do one or more manoeuvres, such as parking or turning around.
- A small mistake does not always mean you have failed. Stay calm, keep driving safely and focus on the next instruction.
Afterwards
At the end, the examiner tells you the result and goes through any faults. Whether you pass or not, ask for feedback and talk it through with your instructor. It is the best way to plan your next step, from your first solo drive to a quick retest.
Licence and test rules differ from place to place. Check the current rules with your licensing authority, and ask your instructor what applies to you.
