Skin clinic menus can be confusing. These three treatments are on most of them, and each suits a different situation. Your consultation is where you and your practitioner decide what is right for your skin; this guide simply helps you know what to ask.
Professional facial
A facial usually combines cleansing, gentle exfoliation, extractions if needed, a mask and massage. Most facials have no downtime, so they are a good first visit and a chance to get to know the clinic.
Chemical peel
A peel uses an acid solution to loosen the top layers of skin. Light peels may leave your skin pink or flaky for a few days; deeper peels need more recovery time. A patch test and some preparation are often needed first, and sun protection afterwards is essential.
Microneedling
Microneedling uses very fine needles to make tiny, controlled punctures in the skin. Skin is typically red for a day or two afterwards, and clinics usually recommend a course of sessions a few weeks apart. It is not suitable for everyone, for example during an active skin infection.
Questions to ask at your consultation
- What is the downtime, and when can I wear make-up or exercise again?
- Is this treatment suitable for my skin type and tone?
- How many sessions do people usually have, and what does the full course cost?
- What aftercare will I need at home?
Results vary from person to person. A good practitioner will give you a realistic picture and will tell you if a treatment is not the right choice.
