Why daily sunscreen matters after skin treatments

Ask any skin practitioner for one aftercare habit and most will say the same thing: sunscreen, every day. After many clinic treatments your skin is more easily irritated by the sun, and sun exposure can lead to uneven colour while it recovers.

What to look for

  • Broad spectrum. It protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • SPF 30 or higher, which is what dermatology bodies such as the American Academy of Dermatology generally recommend for daily use.
  • A texture you enjoy wearing. The best sunscreen is the one you will actually put on every morning. Mineral formulas can feel gentler on freshly treated skin.

How to use it

  • Apply it as the last step of your morning routine, including on cloudy days.
  • Use enough: roughly a half teaspoon for the face and neck.
  • Reapply about every two hours when you are outdoors, and after swimming or sweating.
  • Add a wide-brimmed hat and shade in the middle of the day.

How long to be extra careful

Your clinic will tell you how long to avoid strong sun, sunbeds and heat after your specific treatment. Follow their written aftercare, and contact them if your skin becomes very red, blistered or painful.
