What to do after a minor car accident

Worried young female driver in white t shirt and jeans speaking on phone while leaning on broken car with open hood asking for help with repair against green field in sunny summer day

Even a small bump is stressful. Keeping a short checklist in your glove box, or on your phone, helps you stay calm and remember the steps that matter.

At the scene

  1. Check that everyone is safe. If anyone is hurt, or if the cars block traffic, call the emergency services straight away.
  2. If it is safe, turn on your hazard lights and move the cars out of the traffic lane.
  3. Call the police if the law where you live requires it, or if the other driver will not share their details.
  4. Exchange names, phone numbers, driver’s licence numbers, plate numbers and insurance details with the other driver.
  5. Take photos of both cars, the road, any signs or signals and the wider scene. Note the time and place.
  6. Ask any witnesses for their name and phone number.

Be polite, but do not argue about who caused the accident and do not sign anything you do not understand. Let the insurance companies work out fault from the facts.

In the next day or two

  • Report the accident to your insurance company or your agent as soon as you can. Many policies require prompt notice.
  • Write down what happened while it is fresh in your mind.
  • Keep receipts for towing, a rental car or medical visits.
  • See a doctor if you feel any pain, even if it seems minor.

Questions to ask

Ask your agent or claims adjuster how the claim process works, whether you can choose the repair shop, and whether your policy includes rental car coverage while your car is being repaired. Every policy is different, so the answers depend on the coverage you chose.
