Choosing sympathy flowers: a gentle guide

Choosing flowers when someone has died can feel difficult. There is no single right choice, but a few questions make it easier, and your florist can guide you.

For the funeral service

Wreaths, sprays and standing tributes are usually sent to the funeral home or place of worship, often by close family, friends or colleagues. Check the service details first: some families ask for flowers from close family only, or for donations to a charity instead. Tell your florist the date, time and address of the service so the flowers arrive in time.

For the family at home

A bouquet, an arrangement in a vase or a plant can be sent to the family’s home at any time, during the first days or in the weeks after the funeral, when the house is often quieter. A plant can be a lasting reminder.

Colours and flowers

  • White and cream flowers, such as lilies, roses and chrysanthemums, are a traditional, calm choice.
  • Soft colours or the person’s favourite flowers and colours make a tribute more personal.
  • Cultural and religious traditions differ, so if you are unsure, ask the family or your florist.

The card

Keep the message short and sincere, and sign it clearly so the family knows who sent the flowers. Our post What to write on a flower card has a few ideas.
