How far ahead to book a honeymoon

A couple walks on a serene Maldivian beach at sunset, capturing romance and tranquility.

A honeymoon is often the biggest trip a couple plans together, and it usually happens in the busiest months of your life. Booking at the right time gives you more choice of rooms, better flight times and a lot less stress in the weeks before the wedding.

The short answer: six to twelve months ahead

For most honeymoons, start planning about a year before the wedding and aim to book six to nine months ahead. That window usually gives you the widest choice of flights and the best rooms, such as overwater villas, sea-view suites or small boutique hotels with only a handful of rooms.

When to book even earlier

  • You are travelling in school holidays or peak season for your destination.
  • You want a specific room type, a small hotel or a remote lodge with limited space.
  • Your route needs several flights, a seaplane or a train that sells out.
  • You plan to combine two or three places, such as a city stay and an island.

When a shorter lead time works

If your dates are flexible, you are happy with a larger resort or you are travelling outside the main season, a few months can be enough. Last-minute deals do exist, but they rarely include the room or the flight times you really want.

Check the season, not just the calendar

Many beach and island destinations have a wet season, and some safari regions are best in the dry months. Before you fall in love with a place, check what the weather is usually like during your dates and ask your travel expert about the trade-offs.

Leave time for the paperwork

If one of you is changing name after the wedding, think about passports early. Travel documents usually need to match the name on your passport, so it is often simpler to book in your current names and travel on your current passports. Check the official rules for your country before you decide.

Finally, add travel insurance from the day you book, and tell your hotels you are on honeymoon. A good plan made early means you can enjoy the wedding without worrying about the trip that follows.
