Electrical faults rarely appear out of nowhere. Small signs such as a warm outlet or a light that flickers can point to a loose connection or an overloaded circuit, and catching them early keeps your home safer.
Signs to watch for
- A burning smell or a smell of hot plastic near outlets, switches or the panel.
- Outlets or switch plates that feel warm, look discoloured or make a buzzing or crackling sound.
- Sparks when you plug something in, or a mild shock or tingle when you touch an appliance.
- Breakers that keep tripping, or a GFCI outlet that will not reset.
- Lights that flicker or dim for no obvious reason, in one room or across the house.
- Loose outlets where plugs fall out easily.
What to do if you notice one
- Stop using the outlet, switch or appliance.
- If it is safe to reach, switch off the breaker for that circuit.
- Do not open outlets, switches or the panel to look inside.
- Call an electrician and describe what you saw, heard or smelled.
- If there is smoke or fire, leave the building and call 911.
Simple habits that help
- Test your smoke alarms every month and replace them as the maker recommends.
- Use extension cords only for short-term jobs, and never run them under rugs.
- Do not plug space heaters or other high-power appliances into power strips.
- Ask an electrician to check the wiring in an older home, or before you renovate.
If you are not sure whether something is serious, ask. A quick visit from an electrician costs far less than the damage an electrical fire can cause.
