A first surf lesson needs very little kit, because the school usually provides the board, the wetsuit and the leash. Check your booking confirmation, then pack these.
- Swimwear: wear it under the wetsuit. A rash vest or sports top under the wetsuit can stop rubbing.
- A towel and warm clothes: you will be cooler than you expect after two hours in the water.
- Water-resistant sun cream: put it on before the lesson, including your ears, neck and the backs of your hands.
- Water and a snack: paddling is harder work than it looks.
- A bag for wet things: so the wetsuit and towel do not soak the car.
Leave jewellery, watches and anything valuable at home or locked away. Tie long hair back, and tell your instructor before the lesson about any injury, medical condition or if you are not a confident swimmer.
Arrive a little early. Fitting wetsuits and choosing boards takes time, and the lesson usually starts with a safety talk on the beach.
