A home battery fills that gap. But a battery adds to the cost, so it is worth knowing when it helps.

When a battery makes sense

Your utility pays little for the power you export, so it is better to store and use it yourself.

You have time-of-use rates and evening power is expensive.

Power cuts are common where you live and you want backup for the fridge, lights, internet or a medical device.

You charge an electric vehicle in the evening or overnight.

When you can wait

If your utility credits exported power at a good rate and outages are rare, panels on their own may be the better value for now. Many systems can take a battery later, especially with a hybrid inverter, so ask your installer to plan for it.

Backup is a set-up, not a given

Not every battery keeps the lights on in a power cut. Backup needs the right inverter and a switch that safely separates your home from the grid. Ask which circuits would be backed up and for roughly how long, and make sure the answer is written in your quote.

A battery stores daytime solar power for the evening and can keep key circuits running in a power cut.
