Wax, paint sealants and ceramic coatings all add a thin protective layer on top of your car’s clear coat. They make the paint easier to clean and help water bead and run off. The differences are in how long they last, how they are applied and what they cost.
Wax
- Usually based on natural or synthetic waxes, applied by hand and buffed off.
- Gives a warm, deep gloss and is easy to reapply yourself.
- Wears off fastest, so it needs topping up regularly. How often depends on the product, the weather and how you wash the car.
Paint sealant
- A synthetic product that bonds to the paint.
- Generally lasts longer than wax and gives a sharp, glassy shine.
- A good middle ground for daily drivers.
Ceramic coating
- A liquid coating that cures into a hard, thin layer on the paint.
- Lasts much longer than wax or sealant when the car is washed correctly. Check the real expected life with your detailer and the product maker.
- Needs careful preparation first: a thorough wash, decontamination and usually a polish, so the price is higher.
- It does not make the car scratch-proof or stone-chip-proof, and it still needs regular, gentle washing.
How to choose
- You enjoy caring for the car yourself: wax or sealant every few months is simple and satisfying.
- You want low maintenance and keep the car for years: a ceramic coating can be worth the higher upfront cost.
- The paint has swirls or dull patches: ask about paint correction first, because any protection locks in what is underneath.
Not sure? Ask for a walk-around. A detailer can look at the paint in good light and explain the options and prices for your car.
