A professional detail resets your car, but daily life starts adding dust, crumbs and road grime straight away. The good news: ten minutes a week is enough to keep it looking cared for until your next visit.
Inside the car
- Keep a small bin bag in the door pocket and empty it whenever you fill up with fuel.
- Shake out the floor mats once a week. Rubber mats in winter save the carpets from salt and mud.
- Wipe the touch points (steering wheel, gear lever, door handles, screens) with a soft microfibre cloth and an interior cleaner made for cars.
- Use a seat cover or blanket for pets. Hair woven into fabric is the hardest thing to remove later.
- Deal with spills straight away: blot, do not rub, and let the area dry with the windows slightly open.
On the outside
- Remove bird droppings, tree sap and bug splatter as soon as you can. Left in the sun, they can mark the clear coat.
- Rinse off road salt after winter drives, paying attention to the wheel arches and sills.
- Wash gently every one to two weeks with a pH-neutral shampoo, a soft mitt and two buckets, rather than a brush car wash.
- Dry with a clean, soft microfibre towel to avoid water spots.
Keep a mini kit in the boot
A spare microfibre cloth, a small bottle of quick detailer or waterless wash, and a pack of interior wipes made for cars cover most surprises. Store them in a box so nothing rolls around.
When the car needs more than a quick tidy, book a maintenance wash or an interior detail and let a detailer reset it properly.
