Lots of dogs feel uneasy at the vet: new smells, other animals and being handled by strangers. These simple steps can make the visit calmer for your dog, for you and for the team.
- Practise handling at home. Gently touch your dog’s paws, ears and mouth, and reward them with a treat.
- Visit when nothing happens. Ask if you can pop in for a treat and a fuss from the reception team.
- Bring their favourite treats. Small, tasty rewards help your dog link the clinic with good things. Ask first if your dog needs an empty stomach for a test.
- Wait somewhere quiet. If the waiting room is busy, ask if you can wait in the car until it is your turn.
- Stay calm yourself. Talk in a soft, normal voice. Dogs notice when their owner is tense.
Tell the clinic when you book that your dog is nervous. Your vet can plan a longer appointment and talk to you about other ways to help if your dog finds visits very stressful.
