Gel, acrylic or builder gel: which is right for you?

A professional manicurist wearing gloves provides a manicure in a salon setting.

Gel polish, acrylic and builder gel can look similar on the day. The difference is in how they are built, how much length they can hold and how they come off.

Gel polish

A thin coloured layer cured under a lamp. It suits natural nails at their own length and is removed by soaking off. Most people refresh it every two to three weeks.

Builder gel

A thicker, flexible gel that gives natural nails a little more structure, or short extra length. It is usually filled in rather than fully removed each time.

Acrylic

A powder and liquid mixed into a hard layer that can hold longer extensions and bold shapes. It needs infills every two to three weeks and is removed by filing and soaking.

Your nail technician will look at your nails, the length you want and how you use your hands before suggesting one. If you have had a reaction to nail products before, mention it when you book.
