What to wear for a family photo session

A cheerful family of three enjoying a sunny day outdoors, dressed in elegant matching outfits.

Clothes are the question families ask about most before a session. The good news: you do not need new outfits or perfect matching. A few simple choices make the photos feel calm and timeless.

Coordinate, do not match

Pick a small palette of two or three colours that sit well together, such as cream, soft blue and denim, or sage, oatmeal and rust. Give each person one of those colours instead of dressing everyone in the same shirt.

Choose texture over pattern

Knits, linen, cotton and soft dresses photograph beautifully. Small patterns are fine for one person; big logos, slogans and bright neon pull the eye away from faces.

Comfort comes first

If children can run, sit on the grass and be picked up, they relax, and so do you. Bring a layer for cooler evenings and shoes you can walk in to the location.

A short checklist

  • Lay the outfits out together the day before and look at them side by side.
  • Iron or steam what creases easily.
  • Pack wipes, snacks and a spare top for little ones.
  • Bring a favourite toy or blanket: it can become part of the photos.

If you are unsure, send a photo of a few options before your session and we will help you choose.
