What the language levels A1 to C2 mean

A focused group discussion among adults in a library with bookshelves.

Most language schools and exams describe progress with the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The levels are the same for every language, which makes it easier to compare courses and set a goal.

  • A1, beginner: introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions, understand slow, clear speech.
  • A2, elementary: handle everyday tasks such as shopping, directions and talking about your week.
  • B1, intermediate: cope with most situations when travelling and describe experiences and plans.
  • B2, upper intermediate: follow the main points of the news, take part in discussions and explain a point of view.
  • C1, advanced: use the language at work or in study, write clear reports and follow fast conversation.
  • C2, proficient: understand almost everything you hear or read and express fine differences in meaning.

Many people find their skills are uneven: you may read at B1 but speak at A2. That is normal, and a good level test looks at more than one skill.

How to find your level

A placement or level test usually combines a short written part with a conversation. Answer what you can and stop when the questions get too hard: the aim is to place you in a class where you are comfortable but still learning, not to get a high score.
