From A1 to C2, one stamp at a time
We use the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Your level test places you on this ladder, and each course takes you one step up.
A1Beginner
Order in a café
Say who you are, ask simple questions and understand slow, clear answers.
A2Elementary
Find your way around
Ask for directions, shop, and talk about your week and your plans.
B1Intermediate
Travel on your own
Handle most situations on a trip, and tell a story about something that happened.
B2Upper intermediate
Follow the news
Take part in meetings, argue a point and watch films without subtitles most of the time.
C1Advanced
Work in the language
Give a presentation, write a clear report and follow fast conversation.
C2Proficient
Read anything
Understand almost everything you hear or read, and say exactly what you mean.
How long a level takes depends on the language, your classes and your practice between them. Read how long a level usually takes.

Questions before you start
Cannot find your answer? Call us, or ask during your level test.
How long does each level take?
It depends on the language, how many hours a week you study and how much you practise between classes. As a rough guide, many adults need two or three terms of group classes per level. After your level test your teacher gives you an honest estimate for your own plan.
Do I get a certificate?
At the end of each course you receive a school certificate with the level you completed. It is not an official exam result. For an official certificate, take an exam preparation course: this term we prepare students for Example Exam B2 and Example Exam C1 (sample exam names).
What happens in the level test?
A short online quiz and a relaxed ten-minute conversation with a teacher. There is nothing to prepare, and it is fine to stop when the questions get too hard.
I already speak a little. Do I have to start at A1?
No. The level test places you where you are, which can be anywhere from A1 to C1. Some people find they are between two levels, and the teacher helps you choose.
What if I miss a class?
Group classes share notes and homework after every class, so you can catch up. Private lessons can be moved if you tell us 24 hours before (example policy).
How old do children need to be?
Kids’ classes are for ages 7 to 12, in small groups by age and level. Parents are welcome to watch the first class.
